Entry 8: The Final Review (READ THIS BOOK NOW!!!!)

This will be my final blog. It’s also a review of the book. Surprise, Surprise!! I loved the book. There is so much to digest. First off I love space and finding things out about space, so the first check for that was before I even started the book. This book is perfect for me. I cannot sit still unless reading an interesting book. Weir never lost my attention for a second. He explains things with just enough detail and depth to make it easy to understand Watney’s process and thought, but not overexplaining to make it sound like a math lecture (blegh). Speaking of depth, this book is overloaded with depth. The general idea is still there, what with Watney being stranded and trying to survive and all. But then there’s more. The executives find out he is alive, and try to guess his move before the establishment of communication. The moral dilemma of whether or not to tell the crew, which I personally side with Mitch, and think the crew should be told and make their own decision. The plot twists are also an addition to the depth. The Hab ripping, the rover tipping, the dust storm. Even the tiny details such as Watney’s complaints about disco and 70’s TV or Agatha Christie. Speaking of those, I want to go on a tangent for a second. This book is set way farther into the future than our current time, so one question I do have is why the 70’s TV? I don’t know how old each person is, but I doubt they sent someone old enough to have grown up in the seventies to a Mars mission. It just made me wonder. I love the addition of the communication between the crew and their loved ones. It’s a nice sentiment and really takes a stab at the heart, pulling on emotions. It made me think of what would happen if I couldn’t see my family for as long as they did. Wow. I don’t even think I could endure that. Finally, the rescue scene is amazing. Speaking of this scene, the Beck-Johanssen romance thing mentioned earlier? It adds to the book a lot, even though it’s only mentioned three times. This is what makes Andy Weir an amazing author. He knows what he is talking about, he can spin a story, and he includes detail that makes every moment action packed, whether it be the fight for survival, the crew's preparations, or Earth’s struggle to find a way to bring Watney home. There is a movie that is based on this book, and I think it’d be a great thing to watch. But only if it follows the book relatively well. If it doesn't, I'm out. I highly recommend this book to anyone who wants a good book to sit with and read through the day. I couldn’t put it down, and I don’t think you’ll be able to either. So long from me, and READ THIS BOOK!!!!!
